LEADING riders from across Bahrain have signed up for the Breef Endurance Horse Ride Championship, starting at 6am today.
The event, organised by the Bahrain Royal Equestrian and Endurance Federation (Breef), will take place at the Bahrain International Endurance Village in Sakhir.
This will be the third event of the 2011/12 season. The first was held last month for the Breef President Cup, which covered a total distance of 100km. It was followed by the National Day Ride two weeks ago.
Featuring team competition, this weekend's championship consists of two rides. The first is over 120km and is divided into five stages. The first two will be 30km each, to be followed by 20km for the third, 20km for the fourth and 20km for the fifth stage.
Among favourite stables taking part is the Royal Endurance Team, captained by Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa.
The team includes Hood Ebrahim Bucheeri, Gurden Singh and Noueddine Kaddouri.
Other stables in the fray are Al Khalidiya, Al Asayel, Al Zalzal and Al Talia.
In the 80km event, due to commence at 6.15am and is open for younger and newly-joined riders, the organisers approved three stages.
The first stage is over 30km, to be followed by another 30km for the second, while the third and final stage will cover 20km distance.
The endurance village had a busy day yesterday, with all participants escorting their horses for the veterinary examination, while final touches were made to prepare the venue for today's ride.
